  • SCE Gaskets

    from SCE website.

Now the leader in hard core engine gaskets, SCE Gaskets was started in Dan Hunter’s (Ryan’s dad) garage in 1990 as a result of needs identified by the family’s involvement in racing, Following Hunter family roots (his grandfather built bootlegger cars) Ryan has been involved in racing since his teens working on everything from bracket cars to Top Fuel dragsters, eventually co-owning a drag boat operation with his brother Scott in the 80’s and early 90’s. The family tradition continues with Ryan’s sons Caleb and Aaron, Caleb drag races a big block 68’ Camaro, and Aaron races shifter karts.

Using clever design, CNC technology, dynamometer testing and “real world” thrashing, SCE has developed unique, patented and durable sealing solutions for race engines. Innovations include the invention of embossed copper exhaust gaskets (Pro Copper Exhaust), the first self sealing copper head gasket (Titan) and the first and only integral combustion seal in a copper head gasket (ICS Titan).

A closely held corporation, SCE can react quickly to customer and industry requirements with the highest quality materials, in house design, tooling and production. None of our products are made in China! SCE Gaskets are manufactured in our facility in Lancaster, California.

The company boasts a customer list of the most renowned engine builders and race teams in professional motorsports, as well as being the exclusive gasket supplier for several OEM racing and development programs.
Over the years customer input has helped us create new gasket offerings for professional engine builders and performance enthusiasts, we appreciate your business and comments. Please contact us at 1-661-728-9200 or e-mail us at rhunter@scegaskets.com.

    BESTgasket Company

from best gasket compay web site
Manufacturing vintage automotive gaskets is what we do…sealing history! 95% of our products are manufactured in the USA by BESTgasket. Even though we have been making gaskets for 60 years, perhaps you have never heard of us until now. Advertising has never been their strength; providing the best gaskets for your vintage ride, is!
BESTgasket was founded in the 1940s by Jack Best, making and selling a full product line of automotive gaskets regionally on the West Coast. In the 1980s, the company began focusing primarily on gaskets for the vintage market. BESTgasket was purchased by Craig Weaver and Armin Brown in 1996. At that time, BESTgasket was known as the low price leader in the industry. Not satisfied, the present owners have charted a new course emphasizing quality. BESTgasket's products are now second to none, while maintaining our pricing advantage.

BESTgasket manufactures HIGH-QUALITY gaskets throughout our entire product line, but here we want to bring special attention to our HEAD GASKETS and REAR MAIN SEALS.

    ABOUT THEIR HEAD GASKETS

The head gasket is the most critical of all engine gaskets, and therefore demands much of our attention.

They make two styles of premium-quality head gaskets:

    1) Copper (suffix of "C”) – consists of two outer sheets of a generously thick .010" copper and a low-density graphite “filler” sheet. This high-quality graphite sheet is superior to asbestos, which was used in the old days, and far superior to the non-asbestos materials found in other maufacturers' modern copper head gaskets. Excellent torque retention is achieved by using superior materials. Our copper gaskets are definitely “old-school,” but with a modern flair for better performance. They are such works of art, we almost hate to sell them!
    2) GraphTite™ (suffix of “G”) – consists of Kevlar reinforced graphite facing material mechanically bonded to both sides of a perforated steel core. This modern engineered, high-performance material is rated to a temperature of 1400 degrees-F. Steel fire rings are installed in the combustion chamber areas of the gasket.
GraphTite™ head gaskets have superb sealing characteristics, excellent torque retention, and hold up to the punishment dished out by high-performance engines – high quality all the way. This gasket might be overkill for cruiser engines, but so what . . extra performance never hurts!
Install GraphTite™ head gaskets using whatever sealant methods have proven to work well for you over the years. Some engine builders use a spray-on sealant like Copper Coat. Others prefer no spray-on sealant, but use a thin bead of silicone sealant around each water and oil hole.
Note: For lower volume applications where tooling costs are prohibitive, BESTgasket may also use head gaskets from other manufacturers or NOS head gaskets for the really old engines.

    ABOUT THEIR REAR MAIN SEALS
Ever since the big gasket manufacturers discontinued using asbestos in the 1990s, rope rear main seals have been a huge problem to the vintage car enthusiast. The non-asbestos rope seals available from the big boys are next to impossible to trim and do a poor job of sealing. BESTgasket has two solutions to this problem.
    Rubber replacements of rope seals
    GraphTite™ rope seals

BESTgasket has developed rubber replacement seals for the following engines where only rope seals have previously been available:
    Buick st-8 40-50 series, 1934-53Buick V8 364-401-425, 1957-66 *Cadillac V8 331-365, 1949-58EChevrolet V8 265-283, 1955-58Chrysler V8 392, 1957-58 *Ford V8 312, 1956-57 Oldsmobile V8 301-324, 1949-56Oldsmobile V8 371-394, 1957-58 *Oldsmobile V8 394, 1959-64 *

    * included in their Engine Rebuilding Sets, others are only sold separately

GraphTite™ rope seals are miles ahead of any other rope seal out there. This marvelous material is easy to trim. . . and it seals!! To ensure exact trimming, each kit includes installation instructions, a special knife, and a few other trimming aids. Our customers have reported great success with GraphTite™ rope seals, finally solving those aggravating rear main seal leaks. No hype here. . . just results.

    Cometic head gaskets

All cometic head gaskets are 4 layer MLS (multi layer steel). Cometic uses stainless steel for increased strength, it's ablity to rebound and corrision resistance. The outer layers of the gasket are embossed and coated on both sides with a flouroelastomer rubber based material designed to meet the demans of a variety of harsh sealing enviroments, load conditions, and surface finishes. This coating is also heat resistant to 482 degrees F. The shim layers of the head gakset is also stainless steel but is left uncoated and can be varied for a varied thickness. Cometic MLS gaskets are ideal for aluminum or iron surfaces will seal better than any other gasket PERIOD!

    ITM engine components, Inc.

    from ITM web site

ITM Engine Components, Inc. is a worldwide distributor and importer of internal
engine components for import vehicles. This includes Asian and European vehicles as
well as Domestic applications based on import platforms. Our components primarily
are for passenger vehicles and light trucks but some engines do also carry over into the
    industrial market.

ITM's parent company is Folks Enterprise LTD. which is located in Taipei, Taiwan.
Folks Ent. is a large part of why ITM can bring high quality parts to the US at such
low aftermarket prices. Folks Ent. communicates directly with the far east factories
that ITM purchases from to make sure that ITM's specifications are met before the
parts are ever loaded for shipping. Heavy communication between the factory, Folks
Ent, and ITM, is a very thorough process to make sure ITM is providing the best
possible component to the automotive aftermarket. The components we distribute
meet or exceed OEM specifications for quality. Many of these components are
manufactured by the same factories that are contracted by the original auto maker.
All have ISO processes in place.

    Hondata heatshield gasket

The Heatshield is a replacement intake manifold gasket made from special high temperature plastic, designed to insulate the intake manifold from the cylinder head.

The Heatshield is a replacement intake manifold gasket made from special high temperature plastic, designed to insulate the intake manifold from the cylinder head.

Hondata have developed a special high temperature insulating gasket which replaces the stock intake gasket. This and bypassing several heat sources significantly reduces the transfer of heat from the head to the intake and incoming air giving you up to 5% more power.

Turbocharged cars often use an aluminum intercooler to cool the air compressed by the turbo. The intake manifold is also made of aluminum but because it is heated by the head from combustion and coolant, works in reverse to an intercooler by heating the intake air by as much as 50° C.

Fact: For every 3.3 °C (5° F) rise in intake temperature, air density drops 1%. The hotter the air, the less fuel the computer injects to compensate for reduced oxygen. HondaLogger datalogging software has enabled us to measure intake air temperature under varied driving conditions.

Around town, testing has shown an average drop of around 10 degrees C which is good for around 3 percent power increase. Remember though that 3 percent power increase is difficult to feel. You'd feel a greater change in performance getting rid of that passenger. In certain conditions a 30° C drop has been measured.

The Honda manifold is heated in up to 5 places. From the head, the interior heating takeoff hose, the cold idle valve, the idle control valve and the throttle body heater. The Heatshield gasket kit contains an insulating gasket, and installation instructions. A race version only version with the thermostat bypass blocked is also available.

    Edelbrock

    from edelbrock's web site

Any gasket can create a seal, but a good gasket can do it with less clamping force, and for a longer period of time. Edelbrock's gaskets are not only manufactured from extremely high quality materials, but theyre also designed specifically to fit our intakes and cylinder heads, so theres no chance that our gaskets will interfere with the operation of either component. These gaskets also work with most stock cylinder heads and intakes, aluminum or cast-iron, as well as other aftermarket components. Top quality Edelbrock gaskets ensure a perfect seal every time.
    COMPLETE HEAD GASKET SETS
Get the gaskets you need in one package! These complete sets include every gasket you need to install cylinder heads - head, intake, exhaust, valve cover, distributor, and thermostat housing gaskets.

    CYLINDER HEAD GASKETS
These Head Gaskets feature a tough, scuff-resistant silicone rubber coating that provides excellent sealing and conformability. They don't require the engine to be warmed up in order to seal, and if the engine needs to be disassembled, they release without sticking. The silicone coating reduces fluid migration through the gasket, and leaks, if they occur, are easy to detect on the white material.

    INTAKE GASKETS
Matched to Edelbrock Performer and Performer RPM cylinder heads and manifolds, our Intake Gaskets allow for optimum flow and performance. The new MP-2N Micropore® technology does not use solvents making our gaskets environmentally friendly. Impervious to most chemicals, this synthetic fiber composite provides a high recovery under load. This means that when compressed, the gasket will conform to any imperfections on the sealing surface even using lower flange pressures. A nitrile bead around each port opening makes the seal even better.

    EXHAUST GASKETS
Edelbrock Exhaust Gaskets are made of EnCore™ HTX-900; a high-density non-asbestos fiber/metal core composite material consisting of two graphite coated, heat resistant fiber blended sheets that are mechanically and chemically fused to an expanded steel core. The finished product provides high heat resistance, excellent load retention and unmatched sealing performance on exhaust manifold and header applications. A 50% recovery rate allows for gasket expansion in the event your header loses the proper header bolt torque.

    VALVE COVER GASKETS
Fabricated from performance CRC (core-reinforced-composite), Edelbrock Valve Cover Gaskets provide excellent sealing integrity and conformability for easy installation. The multi-layer construction has two highly compressible, high rubber content, fiber-reinforced outside layers which are chemically bonded to a high strength composite core. This unique core-reinforced construction has a radial strength to resist high-vacuum or blow-out conditions.

    ElringKlinger Metaloflex

    from elringklinger web site

Metaloflex® from ElringKlinger: The internationally acknowledged brand name for innovative, multi-layer metal cylinder-head gaskets (CHG), made of beaded, elastomer-coated, spring-steel layers and consisting of a single layer or multiple layers depending on the actual application. Thanks to its modular design elements, this sealing system can be tuned exactly to the technical requirements of the individual engine. This means that many repetitive tasks are no longer necessary, saving both time and money. Providing almost unlimited freedom to designers.

The technical strengths of the multi-layer metal CHG are especially beneficial when used on high-performance spark-ignition engines and diesel engines with direct injection. This sealing system undisputedly ranks in first place in the passenger car market worldwide. Thanks to Metaloflex®, ElringKlinger is the world's largest manufacturer of multi-layer metal cylinder-head gaskets.

Sealing know-how, layer by layer. Optimum interaction between the various layers guarantees the effectiveness and reliability of the overall system.

    Stopper
The stopper is made of cold-rolled strip material or stainless steel in a forming or welding process. Together with the fold-over section of the carrier layer, it forms a camber on the combustion chamber circumference. As the first static sealing area for the combustion gases, the stopper also serves to limit the displacement of the full beads. The engine parts are elastically pre-stressed on the circumference of the stopper. As a result, the vibrations that are caused in the sealing gap by the gas force are reduced.

    Half beads
The half beads generate two-line compression. They seal along the coolant and engine-oil passages, along the bolt holes and around the outer gasket circumference.

    Full beads
The full beads generate three-line compression on the combustion chamber circumference. These elastic sealing elements enable the sealing of very high ignition pressures, even if large dynamic vibrations occur in the sealing gap.

    Functional layers
Spring-steel functional layers with dynamic beads.

    Carrier layer
The primary function of the carrier layer is to adapt the thickness of the gasket to the design-specific installation conditions.

    Mr. Gasket

    from Mr. Gasket web site

For decades in the Hot Rod business, the name Mr. Gasket and its gasket material has been synonymous with race-winning power and performance. For a brand to remain dominant for so many years, it takes focus, a commitment to its core market and a keen sense of what the customer wants.

The history of the Mr. Gasket brand is a real American success story. It is a brand that was started by a few guys with a great product and an ambitious plan. It started basically as a one-man operation — hand-cutting custom-made gaskets and selling them from the trunk of a sedan at local Cleveland racetracks and has grown to include a multi-faceted international powerhouse of the industry’s strongest brand names: ACCEL, Hays, Jacobs Electronics, Lakewood, Mallory and of course Mr. Gasket.

These brands, proven over time on racing circuits and drag strips around the world, have earned them legendary status in Motorsports and an unparalleled reputation in the marketplace. Over the past decades, new brands have come online, each serving the core purpose of bringing the best products possible to the marketplace.

Since 1993, hard work and dedication have been rewarded with unbelievable growth and change for "Mr. Gasket", but we’ve never forgotten where we came from. We are still a company strongly dedicated to grassroots enthusiasts, as well as top name racers. Our goal has always been to lead the market with innovative new products designed to push the power, speed, and performance of street and strip machines as quickly as automotive technology advances.

That’s why our brand names carry an amazing level of recognition that spans across the generations. Brand recognition and loyalty like that can only result from commitment to excellence, unequalled quality, and race-winning innovation that grows with the times.

Today, the new Prestolite Performance is an industry leader in the design, manufacturing, importing and distribution of specialty products for the performance aftermarket. Our vast product offering includes over 8,000 part numbers, ranging from racing to performance to appearance products.

    Dana victor reinz

In 1904, an engineering student named Clarence Spicer left Cornell University to launch a new business in the vacant corner of a New Jersey factory.

While still a student, Spicer had earned a patent for his groundbreaking design of the first practical universal joint to power an automobile. Spicer’s innovation would quite literally unchain the automobile, which had previously relied on chain-and-sprocket drives to transmit power. But at its outset, his new venture was a decidedly bold step.

A talented engineer and inventor, Spicer had neither business nor manufacturing experience. And although the automobile was destined to become a global institution, its future was still far from certain at the turn of the 20th century.

It was from these uncertain beginnings that Dana Holding Corporation emerged as one of the world’s most influential automotive suppliers. Founded on Spicer’s designs, and fueled by the business acumen of attorney, politician, and financier Charles Dana, the company proceeded to expand its product array, technological expertise, and geographic scope throughout the century. Along the way, Dana Holding Corporation also fostered a progressive, people-oriented culture that has added a unique dimension to the products and services the company provides.

Building on these strengths, Dana Holding Corporation products have helped to drive history’s greatest vehicles – from the Model T and the World War II-era Jeep®, to London taxicabs, 18-wheel rigs, giant earth-moving machines, and every car on the NASCAR® racing circuit.

As Dana Holding Corporation embarks on its second century, it continues to build on this proud heritage. Dana people continue their passionate pursuit of innovation. And the company continues to deliver on its commitment to advancing the science of mobility for the benefit of its global customers.

in the supply of axles; driveshafts; and structural, sealing, and thermal-management products; as well as genuine service parts. The company's customer base includes virtually every major vehicle manufacturer in the global automotive, commercial vehicle, and off- highway markets, which collectively produce more than 70 million vehicles annually. Based in Toledo, Ohio, the company employs approximately 35,000 people in 26 countries and reported 2007 sales of $8.7 billion, with more than half of this revenue derived from outside the United States.

By working with OEMs, Dana engineers have developed complete engine sealing solutions for all types of gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuel vehicles.

From composite cam covers and multi-layered steel cylinder head gaskets to oil pan gaskets, Dana provides effective top-to-bottom engine sealing systems. Our composite cam covers offer enhanced NVH characteristics, weight savings, increased design flexibility, and improved emissions. Dana’s patented designs for cylinder head gaskets, such as the Wave-Stopper® cylinder head gaskets, successfully address the sealing challenges of today’s advanced engine designs.

    Mr. Gasket Fuel Bowl Gaskets

Mr. Gasket Fuel Bowl Gaskets fit most Holley carburetors. The fuel level in the float bowl dictates the throttle angle required to pull fuel into the metering system. Lower-than-specification float levels will delay pullover and create a possible lean condition on throttle tip-in which could be misinterpreted as a weak accelerator pump signal. Conversely, a high float level will cause early pullover and a possible rich tip-in condition. Fuel bowl and metering gaskets are a major part of the engine because they maintain the fuel level in its respective place and thus enhance the float system. Four corner holes and screws are provided for easy installation.

A gasket is a mechanical seal that fills the space between two objects, generally to prevent leakage between the two objects while under compression. Gaskets save money by allowing less precise mating surfaces on machine parts which can use a gasket to fill irregularities. Gaskets are commonly produced by cutting from sheet materials, such as gasket paper, rubber, silicone, metal, cork, felt, Neoprene, nitrile rubber, fiberglass, or a plastic polymer (such as polychlorotrifluoroethylene). Gaskets for specific applications may contain asbestos. It is usually desirable that the gasket be made from a material that is to some degree compressible such that it tightly fills the space it is designed for, including any slight irregularities. Many gaskets require an application of sealant directly to the gasket surface to function properly.

    Properties

One of the more desirable properties of an effective gasket in industrial applications for compressed fiber gasket material is the ability to withstand high compressive loads. Most industrial gasket applications involve bolts exerting compression well into the 14 MPa (2000 psi) range or higher. Generally speaking, there are several truisms that allow for best gasket performance. One of the more tried and tested is: "The more compressive load exerted on the gasket, the longer it will last". There are several ways to measure a gasket material's ability to withstand compressive loading. The "hot compression test" is probably the most accepted of these. Most manufacturers of gasket materials will provide or publish these results.

    Gasket Design

Gaskets come in many different designs based on industrial usage, budget, chemical contact and physical parameters. The main types of gaskets are Sheet, Solid Material, Spiral Wound, Double Jacketed and "Kammprofile".

    Sheet Gaskets

The premise is simple in that a sheet of material (in older situations the material would be compressed asbestos, but now generally a fibrous material such as graphite is used) has the gasket shape "punched out" of it. This leads to a very crude, fast and cheap gasket. These gaskets can fill many chemical requirements based on the inertness of the material used and fit many budgetary restraints. Common practice prevents these gaskets from being used in many industrial processes based on temperature and pressure concerns.

    Solid Material Gaskets

The idea behind solid material is to use metals which cannot be punched out of sheets but are still cheap to produce. These gaskets generally have a much higher level of quality control than sheet gaskets and generally can withstand much higher temperatures and pressures. The key downside is that a solid metal must be greatly compressed in order to become flush with the flange head and prevent leakage. The material choice is more difficult; because it is metals that are primarily used process contamination and oxidiation are real time concerns. Also the metal used must be softer than the flange in order to ensure that the flange does not warp and prevent sealing with future gaskets. Even so these gaskets have found a place in industry, although not a large one.

    Spiral Wound Gaskets

Spiral wound gasket utilizes a mix of metallic material and "filler material" generally the gasket has a chosen metal, normally a carbon rich or stainless steel, wound (hence the name) outwards in a circle (although other shapes are possible this is the primary) with the filler material, generally a flexible graphite, starting at the opposite side of the circle and winding in the same direction. This leads to a growing circle of alternating layers of filler and metal. These gaskets have proven to be reliable in most applications and although more expensive than solid material they do not require as high of bolt forces to be effective. This is possible mainly because the graphite makes the primary seal with the flange and the metal only acts to keep the gasket structurally sound.

    Double Jacketed Gaskets

Double Jacketed (hence forth called DJ) gaskets are another combination of filler material and metallic materials. In this application, a tube with ends that resemble a "C" is made of the metal with an additional piece made to fit inside of the "C" making the tube thickest at the meeting points. The filler is pumped between the shell and piece. When in use the compressed gasket has a larger amount of metal at the two tips were contact is made (due to the shell/piece interaction) and these two places bear the burden of sealing the process. Since all that is needed is a shell and piece, these gaskets can be made from almost any material that can be made into a sheet and a filler can than be inserted. This is an effective option for most applications.

    Kammprofile Gaskets

Kammprofile gaskets are used in many older seals since they have both a flexible nature and are great sealers. Kammprofile's work by having a solid corrugated (many equally spaced bumps) core with a flexible covering layer. This arrangement allows for very high compression and an extremely tight seal along the ridges of the gasket. Since the graphite will fail generally instead of the metal core with gasket are repairable and can be done when the seal is not needed such as a shutdown of some kind. Kammprofile has a high initial cost for most applications but this can be justified both by long term savings and increased reliability.

    Improvements

Many gaskets contain minor improvements to increase lifespan or acceptable operating conditions:

    1. A common improvement is an inner compression ring. A compression ring allows for higher flange compression while preventing gasket failure. The effects of a compression ring are minimal and generally are just used when the standard design experiences a high rate of failure.
    2. A common improvement is an outer guiding ring. A guiding ring allows for easier installation and serves as a minor compression inhibitor. In some alkylation uses these can be modified on Double Jacketed gaskets to show when the first seal has failed through an inner lining system coupled with alkylation paint.

    Fel-Pro Head Gasket

    Head gasket
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A replacement head gasket sitting loosely on top of a four cylinder engine block. Once positioned correctly the cylinder head will be bolted down on top of it.
A head gasket is a gasket that sits between the engine block and cylinder head in an internal combustion engine. Its purpose is to seal the cylinders to ensure maximum compression and avoid leakage of coolant or engine oil into the cylinders; as such, it is the most critical sealing application in any engine, and as part of the combustion chamber, it shares the same strength requirements as other combustion chamber components.[1]

    Head gasket types
MLS - stands for "Multiple Layers Steel,". Most modern head engines are produced with MLS gaskets. These typically consist of three layers of steel.
The contact faces are usually coated with a rubber-like coating such as Viton that adheres to the cylinder block and cylinder head respectively whilst the thicker center layer is bare.
Solid copper - A solid sheet of copper, and typically requires special machining called 'o-ringing' that places a piece of wire around the circumference of the cylinder to bite into the copper. When this is performed copper gaskets are extremely durable. Recently companies have started producing copper gaskets with integral sealing wires permitting their retrofit into engines without the removal of the engine block for machine work.
Composite -- an older technology. Typically these are made from asbestos or graphite but are more prone to blowouts than newer gaskets. Asbestos gaskets are becoming increasingly rare due to health concerns.[2]
Elastomeric - a gasket type used by Rover on their K Series engines. It utilised a steel core plate with molded in place silicon rubber beads to seal oil and coolant passages. The bores were sealed by rolled steel fire rings in a more conventional manner. The idea behind the gasket design was to produce a production version of the technology used in F1 engines at the time. The original application of the gasket on the smaller versions of the K Series was very successful. However, an engine redesign resulted in persistent problems with the design - the joint interface became unstable and the gasket could not cope.

    Gasket problems
Occasionally, the compression in the cylinder will cause a leak to form in the gasket and the gasket will have to be replaced, or severe damage can take place (a "blown" head gasket). This problem has been exacerbated by the use of aluminum rather than iron cylinder heads; while lighter than iron, aluminum has a much greater thermal expansion rate, which in turn causes a great deal more stress to be placed on the head gasket. Engine makers have responded to this by adding a non-stick coating such as Teflon to the surface of the head gasket.
If the gasket fails, a variety of problems can occur, from compression loss (leading to power reduction, or a rough engine), to exhaust gases being forced into the cooling system, leading to the engine overheating and increased engine wear due to the motor oil being mixed with antifreeze. Coolant can leak into the cylinders, causing the exhaust to issue steam[3] and the catalytic converter to be damaged. If a very large amount of coolant does this, hydrolock can occur, causing extensive engine damage. Sometimes, all that may happen when a head gasket is blown causing excessive steam erupting from the tailpipe and the engine may act and drive like normal.

A damaged head gasket can cause compression to leak between cylinders.
Head gasket condition can be investigated by checking the compression pressure with a pressure gauge, or better, a leak-down test, and/or noting any indication of combustion gasses in the cooling system on a water-cooled engine. Oil mixed with coolant and excessive coolant loss with no apparent cause, or presence of carbon monoxide or hydrocarbon gases in the expansion tank of the cooling system can also be signs of head gasket problems.
Driving with a blown head gasket (if possible) can cause additional extensive damage due to overheating or loss of lubrication.
Blue exhaust smoke may be indicative of oil-burning.

    fel pro head gaskets

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A felpro head gasket is a gasket that is located between the engine block and cylinder head for a internal combustion engine. A fel pro head gasket seals the cylinders to ensure maximum compression and avoid leaks of coolant or oil into the cylinders.

    Head gasket types
These typically gasket consist of three layers of steel.
The contact faces are usually coated with a rubber-like coating such as Viton that adheres to the cylinder block and cylinder head.
Solid copper - A solid sheet of copper, copper gaskets are extremely durable.
Composite -- these are made from asbestos or graphite and are more prone to blowouts. Asbestos gaskets are rare due to health concerns.

    Gasket problems
Occasionally, the compression in the cylinder will cause a leak to form in the gasket and the gasket will have to be replaced, I would use a felpro head gasket or a fel pro gasket set. The use of aluminum rather than iron cylinder heads makes this problem more prominent but aluminum has a much greater thermal expansion, which causes more stress on the head gasket. Engine makers have reduced this problem by adding Teflon to the surface of the head gasket.
If the gasket fails, problems will, from compression loss, to exhaust gases being exposed to the colling system and causing the engine to overheat. I had this problem with one of my cars and how I found the problem was my motor oil was white. This is a sign that antifreeze is mixing with the oil. Coolant can also end up in the cylinders causing steam that can damage your exhaust. A damaged head gasket can cause leaks between cylinders so use a pressure gauge, or do a leak-down test, to see what your compression loss is. Driving with a blown head gasket can cause extensive damage from overheating and loss of oil. Burning oil is usually Blue exhaust smoke.
